Origin of the Tapas
The small amounts of food that are served in the bars to accompany the drink are popularly known as tapas.
Nowadays it has become fashionable to go from tapas to bars but, what is the origin of this tradition? There are authors who claim that the origin of the tapas is due to a disease contracted by Alfonso X “El Sabio”, which forced him to take small doses of wine and he accompanied them with some food so that he would not get on the head.
There is another theory that the origin of tapas is due to Alfonso XIII during an official visit to Cádiz; he entered the Ventorrillo del Chato and ordered a glass of Jerez. Then the innkeeper covered the glass with a slice of ham to prevent sand from entering from the beach, due to the air that had risen.
The King asked the reason for his gesture and the innkeeper explained it to him. Alfonso XIII liked the idea; he ate the ham and drank the wine. Then he asked for a glass with “another equal tapa” and he was joined by the other members of the Court.
Returning to our century, it is worth highlighting the social value that this tradition brings. Beer, wine or a soft drink accompanied by a delicious tapa, a combination of “real” origin to spend a pleasant time in the company of yours and disconnect from the routine that normally surrounds us.
