But maybe travelling all around the country is not an option, or at least not now. So, just in case, here you will find the most common, easy and authentic Spanish tapas recipes.

Tortilla Española (Spanish Omelette)

There is no doubt about Spanish tortilla recipe is the greatest demanded. Spanish omelette is a very commonly served dish in our country, and it is as well-known as “tortilla de patata”, which means “potato omelette” in Spanish. It is so easy to prepare! You just need 2 or 3 simple ingredients — eggs and potatoes are compulsory, but we strongly recommend you to add onions. The result is delicious! And depending on the situation, it is not only served as a tapa, but also as a main dish for a meal. It is also very popular as filling for sandwiches.

We are going to give you all the ingredients and steps needed to prepare this Spanish tapa recipe of approximately 4 servings. It will take you around an hour — 40 minutes of preparation time plus 20 minutes of cooking. So, without further ado, let’s get started with this Spanish tapa recipe!

Ingredients:

⇨ 1 kg potatoes, peeled and rinsed

⇨ 8 large eggs

⇨ 1 onion

⇨ salt and pepper to taste

⇨  extra virgin olive oil

Instructions:

⇨ Cut the potatoes into small slices, of half a centimetre approximately.

⇨ Dry the potato slices and put them into a bowl. Once in the bowl, sprinkle the potato slices with salt, and mix them well.

⇨ Heat abundant high-quality extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan at medium-low heat.

⇨ When the oil is hot enough, add the potatoes to the pan and more oil if it is necessary until they are all covered.

⇨ Let the potatoes cook for 20 minutes at a low heat.

⇨ While the potatoes are being cooked, beat the eggs in a large bowl and season them with some salt.

⇨ Cut the onion in thin slices, and fry them in a different pan for about 10 minutes until they are caramelized.

⇨ Once the onions are caramelized, drain off the possible excess of oil and add them to the egg mixture.

⇨ When the potatoes are ready, remove them of the pan with a slotted spoon to a colander to let them cool off while you drain the excess of oil.

⇨ Once the potatoes are ready, add them to the egg mixture and mix all well.

⇨ Let the mixture sit for about 10/15 minutes.

⇨ Remove all the oil from the same pan where you fried the potatoes and add the egg mixture over a medium-low heat. Remember that the oil that you have removed can be reused!

⇨ Cook the potato and egg mixture over a low heat during 6 – 8 minutes approximately on the first side.

⇨ Once you are sure that the bottom is well cooked, you have to flip the tortilla. So, take a plate larger than the pan and put the dish over it. You have to flip it quickly before sliding the uncooked side back in the pan.

⇨ Once the entire tortilla is cooked, slide it out of the pan and put it onto a serving plate.

Croquetas de Jamón (Ham Croquettes)

Our famous croquetas, or croquettes, are also one of the Spanish favourites tapas recipes. They are basically small, lightly breaded and fried sort of béchamel fritter — and they can be filled with almost anything. They are a sure hit as a tapa or an afternoon snack accompanied by a beer or glass of wine.

Although they can be filled with almost anything, we think that the most popular croquettes are those made of ham — croquetas de ​jamón. They are definitely creamy, smooth and very tasty. The mixture of béchamel and ham turns into a pastry — then, you have to roll it into logs and coat it with egg and breadcrumbs. Finally, they are fried to golden brown.

We want to give you all the ingredients needed and all the steps you have to follow to prepare these delicious ham croquettes (approximately 20). It will take you around 2 hours and a half — 20 minutes of preparation time, plus 2 hours of resting and 10 minutes of cooking. So, without further ado, let’s see how we prepare this incredible Spanish tapa recipe!

Ingredients:

⇨ 4 tablespoons of butter

⇨ 1 tablespoon of onion chopped in very little pieces

⇨ 1 cup of milk

⇨ 1/2 cup of flour

⇨ 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

⇨ Salt and pepper (to taste)

⇨ 1 pound of chopped ham in very little pieces

⇨ 2 eggs beaten

⇨ 1 cup of bread crumbs

⇨ Sunflower oil or vegetable oil

Instructions:

⇨ Melt the butter in a saucepan and sauté with onion over a medium-low heat.

⇨ Add the milk slowly and later, add 1/3 cup of flour, nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste. Stir the mixture constantly until it forms a thick sauce.

⇨ Add the chopped ham to the sauce. Mix it with the rest of the ingredients very slowly. Let it boil for 5 minutes over a low heat.

⇨ Once you have taken the mixture out of the pan, let the filling cool down at room temperature. Thereupon, put the mixture in the fridge for 2 hours.

⇨ After 2 hours approximately, remove the mixture from the fridge. Take approximately 1 tablespoon of the mixture and form a log not too long or too thin. Repeat the process until you have used all the mixture.

⇨ Whisk eggs in a bowl. Mix the remaining flour and bread crumbs using another bowl.

⇨ Dip croquettes in egg and cover them in breadcrumbs. Let them rest for 5 minutes before frying.

⇨ Add enough sunflower oil in a large frying pan to cover the croquettes completely. Fry them until golden brown, 3-4 minutes.

⇨ Remove them from oil and let them drain on paper towels. Finally, enjoy this Spanish tapas recipe!
